  • this as Sehithwa police record fatal road accident, suspected hit and run, and rape

Sehithwa Police Station Commander, Superintendent Molly Lebala-Moduke has confirmed a tragic series of incidents that unfolded in her policing area, including a fatal car crash, a child rape case, and an ongoing investigation into a suspected hit-and-run in Tsau village.

In the first case, the station commander revealed that on Monday morning at approximately 0620 am, a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Toteng-Komana road resulted in the deaths of three school children, and their father.

According to Station Commander Lebala-Moduke, the accident occurred when a vehicle driven by a 28-year-old female traveling from Maun towards Sehithwa attempted to avoid a donkey collided with an oncoming car with five people.

The vehicle route from Toteng towards Maun was driven by a 47-year-old man, with his four school children, two in primary school and two in junior school.

Tragically, the driver and two children aged 8 and 11 lost their lives at the scene. While on the other hand, the driver of the other car and the remaining two children, aged 13 and 15, sustained injuries and were transported to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown for treatment.

In a later update Station Commander Lebala-Moduke confirmed that the 13-year-old passed onwhile in Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital leaving only the 15-year-old, who is still fighting for life.

Lebala-Moduke urged drivers to exercise caution on roads known for high livestock traffic.   “Motorists must follow road laws and remain vigilant, especially in areas where animals frequently cross. Such hazards can severely impair a driver’s ability to navigate safely,” she warned.

In a separate incident, a 12-year-old girl in Standard six was allegedly raped by a 56-year-old man known to her mother.

The station commander revealed that the crime occurred on the night of March 14th and was reported to the police by the victim’s aunt the following evening. Lebala-Moduke reported that the mother had gone to sleep, leaving the suspect alone with the child.

It is alleged that the man dragged the girl to a nearby bush close to the family’s home, where the assault took place. The next day in the evening the aunt of the victim reported the case. The suspect was apprehended by police and remains in custody.

“This incident is deeply concerning as it highlights a troubling trend where perpetrators are often known to the victim and operate near the victim’s home,” she said.

She urged parents to be more involved in their children’s daily activities and to report such crimes promptly to ensure timely investigations and the preservation of forensic evidence. She added that Sehithwa Police have embarked on an outreach campaign, visiting kgotlas in surrounding villages to raise awareness about sexual violence and the importance of community cooperation.

She indicated that they have already reached five villages and plan to continue with others with her calling on the public to partner with the police in fighting these crimes.

In another case under investigation, a 77-year-old man was found dead along the roadside in Tsau village, suspected to have been the victim of a hit-and-run.

According to her, the elderly man was returning home from a night out when the incident occurred.

The police were alerted to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. Tire tracks were visible on the road, pointing to a likely vehicle collision.  A medical practitioner from Sehithwa Primary Clinic pronounced the man dead at the scene, and his body was later transported to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital for further forensic examination.

The station commander revealed that a 53-year-old male, suspected to be the driver involved, has been taken into custody as investigations continue. She reiterated the need for public vigilance and cooperation, stating, “We rely on the community to help us bring justice and prevent such tragedies from recurring.”
