The North West District is set for a busy line-up of entertainment, sporting and cultural activities as Botswana prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence, with the programme entering its main stretch from September 25.
The activities will bring together music, gospel entertainment, athletics, beauty and community celebrations, culminating in the country’s Independence Day celebrations on September 30.
The programme begins on September 25 with a vintage and gospel concert, offering residents an opportunity to celebrate the country’s Diamond Jubilee through music and entertainment.
The following day, September 26, will see the district host two major activities, with the Nhabe International Marathon taking place alongside the Mr and Miss Independence Beauty Contest.
The marathon will add a sporting dimension to the celebrations, bringing runners and athletics enthusiasts together as part of the Independence festivities. Meanwhile, the beauty contest will provide a platform for contestants to participate in the celebrations through a competition centred on the Mr and Miss Independence titles.
The events are part of Botswana’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations, which are being held under the theme “Building Resilience, Driving Prosperity.” The anniversary marks six decades since Botswana attained independence in 1966.
Following the activities of September 25 and 26, attention will turn towards September 30, when the programme will culminate in a Music Festival.
The festival is expected to provide an entertainment-focused finale to the district’s programme, bringing music and celebration to the Independence Day festivities.
The programme also provides for community participation on Independence Day itself. Members of the public in Maun are expected to gather at the Maun Sports Complex on the morning of September 30 for the official programme and other celebratory activities.
Communities outside Maun will also celebrate the occasion in their respective villages, continuing the practice of communities marking Independence Day locally.
With the programme spread across the final days of September, the celebrations offer different forms of participation, from music and gospel performances to competitive sport and the beauty contest.
The vintage and gospel concert will open the final weekend with an emphasis on entertainment, while the Nhabe International Marathon will bring sporting activity into the celebrations. The Mr and Miss Independence Beauty Contest will provide another focal point on the same day, before the Music Festival brings the programme to its conclusion on September 30.
The celebrations also come as Botswana reaches a significant national milestone, with 2026 marking 60 years since independence. The Diamond Jubilee theme, “Building Resilience, Driving Prosperity,” provides the broader framework for the anniversary activities.
The programme is expected to give residents across the district several opportunities to participate in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, whether through attending entertainment events, taking part in sporting activities or joining community gatherings on Independence Day.
As the country prepares to mark its 60th year of independence, the North West programme will place entertainment, sport and community participation at the centre of the district’s celebrations.
