…while ten-year-old girl survives a car accident in Maun
Maun police have reported a tragic incident in which a 23-year-old man from Matsaudi village lost his life following an elephant attack while searching for donkeys.
According to Maun Station Commander, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, the incident occurred on November 27 when two men, aged 23 and 35, ventured into the bush on horseback to locate their missing livestock.
Superintendent Lepodise explained that the men were riding through the bush near Matsaudi village when a charging elephant suddenly emerged from behind a tree. The 35-year-old man managed to escape unharmed, but the younger man was fatally attacked. He was rushed to a nearby clinic, where a doctor certified him dead on arrival.
In response, Lepodisi advised the public to exercise caution when moving through wildlife-prone areas and recommended carrying licensed firearms for protection when searching for livestock in such environments.
In a separate incident, Maun Airport Police Station Commander Superintendent Wetshootsile Pule reported that a ten year old girl sustained a broken leg after being hit by a car in Matlapana, this past Saturday.
According to Superintendent Pule, the accident occurred early in the morning when the driver, aged 25, driving a Honda Fit was on transit on the road leading to Shorobe, carrying three passengers. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle which then veered off the road, struck the girl, collided with a tree, and overturned.
Once the report came in the police quickly went to the scene and rushed the child to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries, which was a broken leg. The driver and passengers on the other hand are said to have escaped with minor injuries.
Superintendent Pule confirmed that investigations were underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, including the nature of how the driver lost control of the vehicle in order to discern the extent of how and what charge they could give the driver.
Pule has since urged the public to exercise caution on the roads, especially during this time of year when accidents tend to increase. He also noted that police have intensified road patrols and enforcement efforts to mitigate accidents and uphold road safety.
The police boss stated, “We are ready to serve and have beefed up our presence to mitigate and swerve crime in the region during this month.”
However, he also advised drivers to drive safely and adhere to road safety laws in order to mitigate such issues from happening.
