Local artist Lesego Sokwe, better known by his stage name DemoLesh BW recently dropped his latest single titled Boipuso Jwa Botswana, a powerful ode to Botswana’s journey of growth and a message of hope to the nation’s youth. The song reflects on the country’s historical rise and urges young people to continue striving for greatness.
“Music is my temple of reflection and growth, and I live for it,” Sokwe shared when discussing his creative process.
Known for his versatility, DemoLesh BW is not confined to any one genre. His music style, which he dubs “Tswana Pop,” fuses elements of Afro Pop, Kwaito, and House, offering a unique blend that resonates with the spirit of Botswana. Through his latest track, he aims to capture the essence of being a Motswana, reflecting on the nation’s past while pushing for continued progress in the face of challenges.
His musical journey began with the release of his debut EP, 2021, followed by The Journey Continues, a project that explored Botswana’s rich culture, tribal heritage, and the beauty of its tourism, particularly in Maun. The latter album highlighted Sokwe’s efforts to showcase the diversity of Botswana’s people and his role in the country’s multicultural landscape.
Reflecting on his early influences, Sokwe credits his grandmother, a popular spoken-word poet, as a major source of inspiration. “I grew up with her poetry, and it shaped my outlook on life and how I embrace my community,” he recalled. Sokwe also honed his skills through his involvement in African church music, where he learned to sing, dance, and even play the piano from a young age.
Despite facing obstacles such as limited opportunities and funding, Sokwe’s determination has not wavered. In addition to his music career, he has found success as an entrepreneur, starting a small business to support his artistic pursuits.
“Music has built me up as a person,” Sokwe said. “It has given me values, a deeper understanding of who I am, and a connection to my culture. It’s been my light in dark times, guiding me through life’s challenges.”
As his current single garners attention and he has submitted his song to BOMU in the hopes of being nominated, Sokwe feels a renewed sense of purpose.
“I have this drive inside me to become more than I am and to be a better person for myself and those around me,” he concluded. “I truly believe that with this thing we call music, I can go places.”
