The 2025 North Basketball League tipped off this past weekend with thrilling matchups across the region. Among the standout performances was Delta Spirit’s convincing 66–47 victory over the BUIST Trojans, setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive season.
In other results, Heart City delivered back-to-back blowouts, overwhelming the Orapa Juggernauts 107–31 before returning to dismantle Serowe Reptiles 108–44. The BUIST Trojans bounced back from their loss to Delta Spirit with a dominant 75–38 win over the Reptiles, who struggled to keep up over the weekend.
Delta Spirit Captain Desmond Morris was full of praise for his team following their opening game, especially given the challenge they faced. “The team has started on a high note with the focal point on defence,” he said. “The team’s defence was really on point and the chemistry was very high. It was a great start to the season, especially against a team we struggle against all the time.”
The win was even more impressive considering the team had to play without their head coach. “The team had to play without our coach who had travelled for a business matter,” Morris explained, “but the vice captain and I managed to have the team together and produce the desired win.”
Looking ahead, Morris emphasized Delta Spirit’s ambition and determination. “The team is focused on winning the North Basketball League so that we can get to the National Championships, but that means we are focused on winning every single game we play,” he said. “We are making a promise to our supporters that we will make the North Basketball League playoffs and will go to the National Championships this year without fail.”
However, the team’s journey won’t be without its challenges, particularly financial ones. Morris made a passionate appeal for support as the team prepares for consecutive away games. “We are still pleading with companies out there to give a helping hand with regards to sponsorship as now we are to start playing away games for the rest of the season,” he said. “We are now to travel to Francistown this coming weekend to take on Heart City and Serowe Reptiles.”
With their season off to a strong start and a clear mission ahead, Delta Spirit is poised to be one of the teams to watch in this year’s league.
