Delta Spirit is set to host its highly anticipated second annual 3×3 basketball tournament, set to take place on December 14th and 15th at Tshwaragano CJSS. The two-day event promises a celebration of basketball and community, blending thrilling competition with a mission to uplift the sport in the North West Region.
Speaking about the tournament, Precious Kayla Bojosi, one of the event organisers, explained the dual purpose behind the initiative. “The tournament is about more than just raising funds for Delta Spirit. It’s about bringing light to our basketball community and uniting people through the sport. We want to attract more spectators and inspire others to take up the game,” she said.
The event is open to everyone confident in their skills, with categories for Under-19, Under-23, and an Open division for men and women.
“We’ve made it an open call to ensure inclusivity,” Bojosi shared. “Registration is easy and accessible through the FIBA 3×3 page and our Facebook page. At just P200 per team, we hope to encourage more participation.”
Winners in the men’s and women’s categories will take home P1,500 and P1,000 respectively, while additional contests like a dunk competition and a half-court shooting contest promise added excitement for players and spectators alike. “For the dunk and shooting contests, spectators can also join in for a small fee. It’s all about creating a vibrant, engaging experience for everyone,” she added.
The tournament will feature music, food stalls, and side activities to enhance the lively atmosphere. However, external vendors won’t be present, as the venue, being a school, limits sales to the host team for fundraising purposes.
Bojosi highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent, saying, “Including the Under-19 category is vital for developing grassroots basketball. It’s a chance for young players to showcase their skills and gain experience in a competitive setting.”
With just two teams registered so far, the organizers are actively working to draw more participants. “We need a minimum of five teams per category to meet the prize thresholds. We’re reaching out to organizations and using social media to spread the word,” Bojosi said.
Reflecting on the tournament’s broader vision, she noted, “Our goal is to make this an annual event, and hopefully, we can grow it to happen twice a year and expand to other locations. Partnering with the Botswana Basketball Association has been a big step forward for us.”
As a final message, Bojosi called on the community to rally behind the event. “This tournament is about unity. It’s a platform for everyone—players, fans, and supporters—to come together and celebrate basketball. We hope to see you there.”
