Delta Spirit Fall Short As Southern League Teams Dominate Top 4

Date:

The dream run for the Northern League came to an end in Orapa as both Maun’s Delta Spirit and Francistown’s Heart City fell short in the Botswana Basketball League (BBL) Top 4, leaving Southern League powerhouses Police and Dolphins to advance to the 2025 finals.

Delta Spirit, crowned North League champions just weeks ago, pushed Police to the limit in a thrilling best-of-three series. The Maun outfit drew first blood on Friday night with a 110–104 victory, sending shockwaves through the tournament. But Police, backed by their experience and depth, clawed back with an 81–74 win on Saturday before sealing the series 2–1 with a 78–74 triumph in Sunday’s decider.

For Delta Spirit captain Moitshepi Sarefo, the narrow defeat was bittersweet.

“The team played its best. The performance we gave was from our heart to our hands… the only difference is that they outplayed us and outscored us,” Sarefo admitted. “It was a tough game we accepted defeat, but it does not stop us from going at it again. Instead, it pushes us to train harder and better ourselves both individually and systematically. The love of basketball does not stop after a defeat.”

In the other semifinal, Heart City, making their debut season in the Nationals had no answer for the Southern League’s Dolphins. The Gaborone giants swept the series with emphatic wins, crushing Heart City 89–48 in Game 1 and 107–38 in Game 2. Their dominance meant there was no need for a third game.

North League Public Relations Officer, Tumelo Boima, summed up the outcome of the weekend.

“With Heart City and Dolphins, Dolphins won Game 1 and Game 2, so there was no need for a third game. With Maun versus Police, Delta won the first game on Friday, Police won Game 2 on Saturday, and it was forced into a Game 3 on Sunday, which Police won as well. So from the Top 4, Dolphins and Police qualified.”

The results show a closing gap between the North and South with Northern Teams fighting through issues of sponsorship but showing flashes of brilliance. Ultimately, both Northern teams were outmatched, while their Southern counterparts displayed the firepower and consistency to reach the final. The Northern teams show potential of taking it all in the near future.

The BBL 25 championship will now be decided in Gaborone, where Police and Dolphins will battle for national supremacy and the right to represent Botswana in the Basketball Africa League.

For the North, it’s back to the drawing board. For the South, it’s another chance to prove their dominance.
