David Secures A Bronze Medal At Dakar African Open

Date:

Botswana judoka Jef David has brought home a bronze medal from the Dakar African Open, held from March 27 to 29, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal. The event featured 165 athletes from over 29 countries.

The Botswana team consisted of Botho Babutsi (Women’s -48kg), Neelo Modise (Women’s -52kg), Tresh Kgosietsile (Men’s -66kg), Jef David (Junior Men’s -60kg, who also competed in the senior division), and Tumiso Phuthego (Senior division).

In an interview, Botswana Judo Federation Marketing Director Eunice Motswaiso noted that the competition was highly competitive, featuring some of the continent’s top judokas.

“While our athletes did not secure podium finishes in the senior division, Babutsi and Kgosietsile fought strongly and progressed to the repechage rounds, demonstrating resilience and growth. Modise and Phuthego also delivered commendable performances. Notably, David secured a bronze medal in the junior category, which was a proud moment for the team,” she said.

Motswaiso emphasised that the Dakar African Open is vital for providing athletes with high-level international exposure. She stated the event allows them to gain ranking points, test their skills against elite opponents, and build the experience necessary for their development. The competition also served as key preparation for major upcoming events, including the Commonwealth Games.

According to Motswaiso, the team underwent a structured preparation programme prior to the event, including intensive training camps, technical sessions, and conditioning.

“While we believe the athletes were well prepared, competitions of this level always highlight areas for improvement, which we will continue to work on moving forward,” she added.

The Botswana Judo Federation is now preparing for the Southern African Judo Confederation Cadets and Seniors Championships taking place over the Easter holidays. Additionally, the team will participate in the Senior African Championships in Nairobi, starting April 25, 2026.
