Cousin’s Murder Case Handed Over To DPP

A murder case in which a 30-year-old man of Moeti Ward is accused of murdering his cousin by allegedly hitting him with a plank on the head following a misunderstanding has been handed over to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused person Ikatametseng Chalegwa who was initially charged for unlawful wounding had his count amended to murder after the victim, Keoagile Kehemetswe succumbed to the injuries on the 26th of April last year.

The court heard that on that fateful day, an eyewitness who reported the incident to the police saw Chalengwa on top of the complainant repeatedly hitting his head against a concrete block while the latter kept begging him to stop assaulting him as he was in severe pain.

It is alleged that the accused person proceeded by hitting the complainant with a plank on the head which left him with a wound on the head. The accused person was arrested after the matter was reported to the police while the complainant was taken to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital for medical attention where he was subsequently referred to Nyangabwe Hospital under critical conditions.

Botswana Police Prosecutor Paul Basupi this week informed court that investigations on the matter are complete, adding that the case has since been transferred to the DPP.

Basupi informed court that the DPP prosecutor who has been allocated the case was not available and has not given any instructions regarding the matter. Basupi pleaded for another court date for the said prosecutor to give a status update.

The accused person who is currently out on bail had nothing to say and the case was postponed to the 3rd August 2023 for status update.
