Court Remands Suspects In P400,000 Post Office Heist

  • Trio joins Postmaster for Tatitown post office staged robbery

Three men suspected of involvement in a staged robbery at the Tati Town Post Office last Thursday—where P400,000 was stolen—appeared before the Francistown Magistrate’s Court this Tuesday.

Mobili Makhalebe (38), Gofaone Diteko (35), and Babili Nfandiso (31) are alleged to have staged the robbery, with Postmaster Keabatswe Makei reportedly acting as the mastermind behind the heist.

Thirty-seven-year-old Makei was the first to be arraigned last Thursday. She was charged with stealing by a servant and remains in custody.

The funds, intended for the March pension payouts for elderly beneficiaries, were received at the Tati Town Post Office on Wednesday, March 31, 2026. Shortly after receiving the cash, the Postmaster is alleged to have begun embezzling the money that same day.

During the trio’s brief court appearance, Prosecutor Sesafeleng Dijeng pleaded with Magistrate Ntule to remand the suspects until next week. At that time, the State will provide reasons why the accused are not suitable candidates for bail.

“We wish for the bail application and arguments to be heard before the substantive Magistrate when these accused persons appear alongside the first accused in this matter on April 14,” Dijeng stated.

The three men face charges of theft, while the Post Office employee is charged with stealing by a servant. Investigations by the Tati Town police indicate the robbery was staged, as no signs of forced entry or violence were found at the scene.

Superintendent Oscar Bayani noted, “During our investigations, we realised things were not adding up and there were a number of loopholes in the alleged robbery. CCTV footage helped immensely in our investigations, leading to the identification of one of the suspects.”

To date, police have recovered P164,000 of the stolen P400,000.
