City Kings Secures Third Spot In The DTCB Women’s Championship

Date:

Maun’s City Kings FC secured third place in the DTCB Women’s Football Championship over the weekend.

City Kings lost its first game 9-0 against Mazottie FC, but progressed to the losers’ final where it walloped Gantsi United Farmers FC 3-0 to clinch third place and pocket P25 000. The two games were played at the Royal Aria Stadium in Tlokweng and at the Lekidi West Ground in Gaborone on Saturday.

The four teams that participated in the DTCB Women’s Football Championship included Gantsi United Farmers from the Western Block, Dunamis and Daughters from the Eastern Block, City Kings from the Northern Block, and Mazottie FC from the Southern Block.

Mazottie FC was crowned the champions after beating Dunamis & Daughters 7-0 in the grand final match played at the Royal Aria Stadium, pocketing P50,000. Runners-up Dunamis won P35,000, while Gantsi United Farmers FC won P10,000 for finishing in fourth place.

In an interview, City Kings FC Coach Matlhogonolo Moitoi said that he was happy with the performance of his team. He stated that though their first game against Mazottie FC, which they lost 9-0 was very tough, they gained vital experience from it.

Moitoi noted that most teams from the Southern block currently set the highest standards for quality and tactical execution, meaning that playing against such sides offers a learning opportunity for a team from the Northern block.

He explained that losing their first game did not discourage them but rather motivated them to correct their mistakes and put more effort into their second game, which they won.

Moitoi had previously highlighted the importance of the championship, citing it as a platform for developing women’s football and exposing talent. He stated that players from the Nhabe region are usually disadvantaged by a lack of exposure to advanced sports facilities, so the competition gives them an opportunity to advance their talent in a new environment.

DTC Botswana invested P1.77 million in the 2026 DTCB Women’s Championship, with a major focus on strengthening women’s football at the regional level. The sponsorship provides regional clubs with essential equipment such as kits, match balls, and goalpost nets, while promoting grassroots talent development. The initiative aims to expand opportunities for women and girls in football and support the sport’s long-term growth in Botswana.
