Plans are underway to host the first edition of the Chobe Kids Bridge Marathon which is expected to take place on Saturday 30th August 2025 in Kazungula, Botswana.

The event will be open to all children aged between 2 and 16 from across Botswana and the participants can register individually or through schools, clubs, and families. Its categories include the 100m toddler dash (with guardian assistance) which is open for children aged between 2 and 3 years, 500m fun run (4 –6 years), 1km (7–9 years), 2km (10–12 years) and 5km (13–16 years).

The starting point for the marathon will be the Kazungula Trans Cash & Carry grounds while the finishing point is designated on the halfway of the Kazungula Bridge.

In an interview, Marathon Founder and Organiser Maungo Tshito said that through the marathon they intend to promote healthy lifestyles among children through physical activity. She stated that they also intend to offer a fun and safe space for kids to enjoy sport, foster early development, confidence, and discipline through running.

Tshito noted that their aim is also to bring together families and communities to support child-focused wellness events and encourage more youth involvement in sport from a grassroots level. She stated that the focus is not only on about the competition, but also about having fun, participation, and learning.

She added that the event is designed to celebrate every child’s participation, building joy and confidence in their journey. Tshito revealed that the event includes educational and interactive zones for both kids and parents. Tshito has expressed that all the marathon routes are designed for safety, fun, and age suitability.

‘‘This marathon is unique because it takes place at a landmark venue, Kazungula Bridge and Trans Cash & Carry grounds, it includes toddlers as young as 2 years, making it Botswana’s most inclusive kids’ run,’’ she said.

According to Tshito, the first activation of the Chobe Kids Bridge Marathon which was held on the 29th March 2025 attracted over 300 participants. She said that they will host another second activation on the 31st May 2025 in Kazungula Trans Mall and they are also expecting good numbers of participants.

Tshito further revealed that some part of the profit earned through the marathon will be given back to the community by donating to the developments/initiatives of people living with disabilities in Chobe to build the Rehabilitation Centre in Kazungula.

‘‘The name of the marathon represents the spirit of Chobe, known for its natural beauty and vibrant culture, while celebrating children as the heart of our future.  The word “Bridge” in the name symbolizes both the Kazungula Bridge landmark and the event’s purpose of building bridges to health, unity, and youth empowerment,’’ said Tshito.

Tshito said that all participating kids will receive a medal, certificate, and refreshments. She revealed that the top runners in each category will be awarded, trophies and fun prizes like school supplies, sports kits, and gift packs.

The current sponsors of the Chobe Kids Bridge Marathon are, Clover Botswana which provides nutritional support and fun engagements for kids, 03 Beverages which supports with logistics and youth outreach, while Trans Cash & Carry is providing the venue and essential infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the registration of the main run is P250 and it is currently on going, while kids with disabilities register for free.
