In a major boost for local healthcare, tourism giant Chobe Holdings Limited, through its non-profit subsidiary Chobe Impact, has donated essential medical supplies worth over P250,000 to the Nort West District Council to help address key healthcare needs in local communities.

The critical package donated yesterday, includes 500 Metformin tablets for diabetes, 1,000 Nifedipine tablets for high blood pressure, 15,000 Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) sachets, and 57 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) coveralls.

The protective gear is expected to support ongoing health screening efforts in the district, particularly as authorities strengthen Ebola surveillance and preparedness measures in response to increasing cases. The donation will assist frontline personnel and healthcare workers in conducting screening activities safely and effectively, contributing to broader efforts to protect communities and enhance public health readiness.

The critical supply package comes at a time when local health facilities face severe drug shortages across the region, and the country.

This is not the company’s first shot at assisting health care needs in the district, in May this year, the company donated over 300 doses of anti-rabies vaccines worth P50,000 to the North West District Council (NWDC) to support response to a rabies outbreak.

During the Covid -19 pandemic, Chobe Holdings assisted the District Health Teams with transport to access certain areas for the administration of vaccines, and other essential needed to contain the disease.

The latest donations followed a direct request from the local authorities and build on a growing partnership between the Council and Chobe Holdings Limited aimed at improving public health outcomes and enhancing the wellbeing of families across the region.

Speaking during the handover of the medicines in Maun today, Chobe Holdings Limited Managing Director, Lempheditse Odumetse noted that access to essential health remains fundamental to community wellbeing and economic development.

“Earlier this year, we supported efforts to improve access to rabies vaccines, and today we are pleased to contribute towards the procurement of essential medication that will benefit patients across the Northwest District. We are equally proud to support frontline screening efforts through the provision of protective equipment, helping to strengthen local preparedness and response measures,” he said.

This investment reflects Chobe Holdings Limited’s continued focus on initiatives that strengthen community resilience, support disease prevention, and improve access to essential healthcare services. As one of Botswana’s leading tourism and conservation companies, Chobe Holdings recognises the important role that healthy communities play in supporting sustainable economic development, conservation efforts, and regional prosperity. The company’s community investments are guided by a long-term commitment to creating shared value and contributing meaningfully to the wellbeing of the communities in which it operates.

He noted that through Chobe Impact, the company remains deeply committed to working alongside government and community stakeholders to support initiatives that deliver meaningful and sustainable benefits to the people of this region.

Odumetse further noted that as a company deeply rooted in the Northwest District, they believe that investing in the health and wellbeing of communities is both a responsibility and an investment in a shared future. He stated such interventions form part of Chobe Holdings Limited’s broader Corporate Social Investment Programme, which focuses on supporting initiatives that advance healthcare, education, community development, conservation, and sustainable livelihoods across Botswana.

In his remarks, NWDC Deputy Council Chairperson, Vepaune Moreti thanked the company for the generous donation. “Blessed is the hand that gives than that receives, may God help your business to prosper so that you can continue giving back to the community,” he said.

He indicated that the country is currently facing a shortage of medical supplies, therefore the donation will help address the challenge.

North West District Council Deputy Council Secretary – Health, Sandra Maripe also appreciated the donation of the medical supplies to the district, citing that besides the essential medicines, the PPEs will go a long way in protecting healthcare workers in conducting screening services for the Ebola virus effectively.
