Chobe District experienced a relatively quiet 2026 Easter period as police in the area recorded low levels of crime incidents and traffic offences due to their heightened and safety measures messages.

In an interview Acting Officer Commanding District No:7, Superintendent Morris Kwena revealed that they did not record any road traffic accidents either minor, serious or fatal, pointing that this is because the district has low volume of traffic.

“We recorded 26 over speeding cases in 2026 compared to 63 cases that were recorded in 2025 same period. We did not record cases of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2026 as compared to one incident that was recorded in last year’s Easter holidays,” he said.

Kwena stated that they have recorded one case of reckless driving in the previous year while this year they did not recorded any case. He added that in 2025 they recorded one case of using mobile phone while driving and in 2026 they had three cases.

Superintendent Kwena also revealed that they recorded 19 cases of failure to wear seat belt in 2025 while this year they registered 16 cases. According to him, in 2025 they recorded 10 cases of driving without due care while this year they recorded eight cases.

With regard to criminal offences, Kwena revealed that in both the 2025 and 2026 Easter holidays they did not register any major cases of burglary, robbery, murder and rape.

He stated that in 2025 they recorded five cases of theft while in 2026 the cases increased to six. Kwena noted that in the previous year’s they recorded four cases of assault while in 2026 the cases also rose to 12.

The police boss noted that the decline in road traffic and criminal offences in the district was a result of the preventative measures that they have put in place.

He expressed that prior to the Easter holidays they sensitised members of the community about crime through the assistance of district leaderships, the elderly, students and teachers, encouraging them to be vigilant of criminal activities and also to enforce safe road measures.

He highlighted that in order to prevent road traffic accidents the police conducted road blocks which were vital in enhancing public safety by enforcing traffic regulations, detecting and preventing criminal activities.

Meanwhile members of the community were also encouraged to be cautious and stay away from the Chobe River as it is currently overflowing.
