The Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) has confirmed the much-anticipated return of the Phoenix Assurance National Super League, which is set to begin in September 2025.
The league which is supported by Phoenix Assurance of Botswana, promises to be a thrilling contest that will not only sharpen athletes but also excite fans and reaffirm BTTA’s commitment to raising the standard of table tennis in the country.
The total of the prize money allocated to the league amounts to P57, 800.00.The reward for the champions in both men and women is P5, 000.00 each player, 2nd position will pocket P4, 000.00 each while third position wins P3,200.00 each.
The league will showcase the talent of local athletes in different countries including Senior Men’s and Women’s Elite Categories: Top 8 ranked players (positions 1–8), Junior Boys and Girls Categories: Top 4 ranked players (positions 1–4). This format ensures 12 players in each category, guaranteeing high-level contests between Botswana’s best.
The league will bring together 24 athletes (12 ladies and 12 men) from local clubs including BDF, Smash Maniacs, Phakalane, Bontleng/Ithuteng, Maikano and Dithubaruba.
According to BTTA Public Relations Officer, Tshegofatso Malepa the league was successfully staged last year but was paused this year as BTTA redirected resources to clubs to support the hosting of local tournaments.
“At the same time, the association shifted its focus towards preparing for and hosting major international competitions. While the strategy expanded grassroots opportunities, it also created a competitive gap at elite level, one the association is now moving to close,” Malepa revealed.
She noted that noted that BTTA saw it fit to bring back the National Super League to ensure athletes remain competitive throughout the year, as they don’t have major international tournaments scheduled between January and November 2025. Malepa added that they only have two youth championships in December which include the Commonwealth Youth U-15 Championships and the Region 5 Youth U-13 Championships.
For his part, BTTA President, Kudzanani Motswagole said that the Phoenix Assurance National Super League will reignite elite competition, keep players in peak condition, and provide the right platform ahead of Botswana’s international commitments in December.
