The Pandamatenga village reading room that was revamped by the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) is expected to promote digital literacy, foster knowledge and empower the next generation.

The project was allocated an amount of P219, 799 by BTC and its funding facilitated several improvements including painting the interior and exterior walls to enhance the overall look and feel, installing air conditioning units, installing a fire suppression system, supplying computer workstations, including desks and chair. The funding also covered the provision of five computers, trunking, power, and network cabling, along with a network switch, supplying and installing backup power (UPS) and installing directional signage to the reading room.

Speaking during the official handover this week, BTC Board Chairperson, Mokgethi Magapa said the project symbolises their commitment to fostering knowledge, promoting digital literacy, and empowering the next generation. He stated that their hope is for the facility to serve as a hub for learning, knowledge sharing, and helping to cultivate the future leaders of this country.

“This initiative reflects BTC’s belief in the power of knowledge and the importance of fostering a love for reading and learning across all ages. Together, we can develop a culture of learning that enhances our community and empowers future generations. Our collaborative efforts can cultivate a learning environment that strengthens our society and empowers the youth,” he emphasised.

Magapa has since urged the children, youth, and adults of Pandamatenga and surrounding areas to utilise the facility as a resource for exploring the world of books and ideas. He noted that the reading room will inspire the young people to view education as the ultimate goal of success. Magapa has also encouraged the older generation to utilise the room as it is never too late to start because knowledge is power.

“Embrace the resources available here. Thank you for your unwavering support and may the Pandamatenga reading room inspire knowledge and community aspiration for years to come,’’ he said.

Magapa has extended his gratitude to Sundani Muthetho who is the reading room attendant for voicing the needs of the Pandamatenga community such the revamping of the facility.

For his part, acting permanent secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Knowledge and Technology, Lesedi Gaolaolwe expressed his gratitude to BTC for their generous support and commitment to the Pandamatenga community. He stated that BTC investment in the Pandamatenga reading room reflects the understanding of the transformative power of education and the importance of fostering a love of reading.

“The Pandamatenga reading room will be a valuable resource for the community, providing a welcoming environment for individuals of all ages to acquire knowledge and grow. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to education and life-long learning,’’he said.

He urged the Pandamatenga community to embrace the gift and ensure that the reading room becomes a centre of inspiration, creativity and collaboration.
