Police in Maun are investigating a disturbing case in which a 38-year-old woman was alleged to have been brutally stabbed multiple times by her partner broad daylight in Maun’s Old Mall this week.
According to Maun Police Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Moutlwatsi Ikobeng, the incident occurred around 5PM on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through shoppers and onlookers who witnessed the horrific scene. The suspect, a 42-year-old man from Thito ward in Maun, allegedly launched the violent attack on his partner, a resident of Disaneng ward also in Maun, following a heated confrontation.
“It is believed that the couple had been experiencing relationship problems. The situation escalated when the woman reportedly informed the man that she wanted to end their relationship. The suspect reacted angrily, drawing a knife and stabbing her several times before fleeing the scene,” said Ikobeng.
The woman sustained multiple stab wounds on the neck and her back and was rushed to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital, where she is currently admitted in a serious but stable condition. Police officers later managed to apprehend the suspect, who remains in custody as investigations continue.
Ikobeng further revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the man was recently out on bail for a separate case, though details of that matter remain under review.
In a separate but equally shocking development, Ikobeng revealed that a vehicle belonging to a 73-year-old businessman from Palapye was found abandoned in Maun over the weekend. The car, a white Nissan Navara, is believed to have been stolen after the elderly man was robbed and fatally murdered last Thursday.
According to police, a 71-year-old woman discovered the victim lying unconscious near his home around 1PM and immediately alerted police authorities right away. The man was rushed to Palapye Primary Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
“The stolen vehicle was later found dumped in Maun on Saturday. We are working closely with our counterparts in Palapye to trace the suspects involved in this heinous crime,” said Ikobeng, adding that no arrests have been made so far. Police have appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects of the murder incident.
