BRU’s Westsure League Thrilling Season Opener

Date:

Botswana’s rugby season kicked off in thrilling fashion this past weekend as the BRU Westsure League Round 1 delivered dominant victories, surprise upsets, and nail-biting finishes across the women’s, men’s, and reserve divisions.

In the women’s league, the Gaborone Hogs made a powerful statement by shutting out BIUST Buffaloes with a commanding 25–0 win. The Hogs, known for their aggressive forward pack and structured play, left no room for error as they dominated all phases of the game.

Equally impressive were the BDF Cheetahs, who ran in multiple tries to register a comfortable 28–0 victory over BU Ryders. The Cheetahs’ backline speed and discipline at the breakdown gave them a clear edge throughout the match.

UB Rhinos Women also had a strong start to their campaign, overpowering the Jwaneng Wildebeest 27–5. The Rhinos showcased a well-balanced game plan, strong defense to keep their opponents under pressure for most of the match. With each team looking to set the tone for the season, Round 1 was a strong indication that the competition in the women’s division will be fierce.

In the reserve division, the Gaborone Hogs Reserves impressed with a dominant 48–7 win over Francistown, underlining the club’s depth in talent. Their performance was marked by aggressive offensive play, which overwhelmed their northern opponents.

The men’s division brought the weekend’s most intense battles. Gaborone Hogs narrowly escaped a determined BIUST Buffaloes side, scraping through with a 10–7 win in a match that was decided in the final minutes. The Buffaloes pushed hard, showing their strength in the set pieces, but the Hogs held their nerve under pressure.

Perhaps the biggest surprise came when the Jwaneng Wildebeest edged out UB Rhinos 10–5. The Wildebeest held firm in defense and capitalized on key opportunities, sending a clear message that they are a force to be reckoned with this season. In another thrilling finish, BDF Cheetahs snatched a 15–14 victory over BU Ryders, a match that kept spectators on edge from start to finish.

As the dust settles on Round 1, it’s clear that this season’s Westsure League is already living up to expectations. With teams showcasing intensity, grit, and high-level rugby, fans can look forward to an electrifying season ahead.
