Botswana Sweeps Honours At ITB Berlin 2026

Date:

Botswana cemented its status as a global leader in sustainable travel this week, walking away with two major accolades at the 60th Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) Berlin, the world’s premier travel trade show, held March 3-5.

In a crowning achievement for the national delegation, Botswana was named “Destination of the Year – Thrilling Experiences” at the prestigious PATWA International Travel Awards. In a double victory, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Wynter Mmolotsi, was honored with the “Tourism Minister of the Year – Nature Conservation” award for excellence in governance.

Accepting the honors, Mmolotsi reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to conservation-led growth. “These awards reflect Botswana’s dedication to sustainable tourism development and community empowerment,” he stated.

The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) noted that the PATWA recognition provides a powerful platform to showcase the country’s unique offerings to the global buyers, investors, and industry leaders gathered in Berlin.

There was clear impact in market penetration and potential for investment on day of the travel show. Leading a delegation of 25 local tourism operators, Mmolotsi and the BTO executed a deliberate strategy to stimulate global demand.

The impact was immediate, as on the first day alone, the delegation conducted 174 high-level meetings. Some operators averaged nine meetings each, securing face-to-time with international agents from key markets including Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the UK, France, Canada, and Denmark.

The BTO highlighted that the “Thrilling Experiences” award validates Botswana’s position as a top-tier destination for high-impact safari and wilderness tourism.

“Botswana’s high-value, low-volume tourism model has positioned the country as a global leader in sustainable travel,” BTO said in a statement. “From pristine wilderness landscapes to diverse wildlife ecosystems, we continue to attract discerning travelers seeking authentic and responsible experiences.”

In addition to the awards ceremony, Minister Mmolotsi delivered a keynote address at the PATWA World Tourism Leaders’ Summit, focusing on “The Future of Tourism.”

As the show concludes today, the delegation leaves Berlin with renewed optimism. The intensive networking and back-to-back sessions are expected to translate into a significant surge in visitor numbers, signaling a robust recovery post Covid -19, and a growth phase for the local tourism industry.
