Botswana Independence Day!

Date:

The main objective of this contribution this week is “A Call for safe and peaceful celebrations” to all the people of Botswana during the upcoming Botswana Independence Day Celebrations. This call is critical since Monday will be a holiday making these celebrations longer – a long holiday indeed. As Botswana prepares to mark its 59th Independence Day on September 30, excitement is building across the country.

As of Friday, this week, hundreds of people are expected to travel to different parts of Botswana to their home villages. Some will gather in popular celebration areas such as kgotla, schools or stadiums to honour this important day in Botswana’s history when we got independence in 1966. From vibrant cultural displays to music festivals and family gatherings, the spirit of unity and patriotism is expected to shine throughout the weekend.

While we as a nation prepare to celebrate, authorities and everyone of us are urging the public to prioritise safety especially on the roads and within their communities where celebrations will take place.

With increased travel comes increased risk, and both the Botswana Police Service and the Department of Road Transport and Safety have issued public advisories encouraging responsible behaviour during this time. Road safety comes first. The Independence Day often sees a sharp spike in traffic volumes as people travel long distances to join friends and family. Unfortunately, this also leads to an increased risk of road accidents. In 2024, the Independence Day weekend saw over 300 reported road accidents, some of which resulted in fatalities.

To prevent a repeat of such tragedies, churches and baruti have prayed along the roads asking the Almighty God to protect us as we drive on the roads. In addition, law enforcement officials have ramped up road safety campaigns in the days leading up to the celebrations. Drivers are being reminded to obey speed limits, avoid drinking and driving, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long trips.

The desire is that we want everyone to reach their destinations safely and return home safely.  The Botswana Police Service and Department of Road Transport will have roadblocks and checkpoints across the country to enforce traffic laws and assist motorists. Public transport operators have also been urged to avoid overloading and to adhere to all safety regulations. Passengers are encouraged to report any reckless driving or unsafe practices.

While Independence Day is a time for celebration, it can unfortunately also be a time when gender-based violence (GBV) cases rise. Alcohol consumption, crowded gatherings, and heightened emotions can sometimes lead to domestic or community-level violence, especially against women and children. The Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture has issued a reminder to the public that celebrations must not come at the cost of safety and respect for others.

We call on all Batswana to celebrate responsibly and look out for one another. GBV is a serious issue that must not be ignored, even during festive times. Let us refrain from taking someone’s life or injuring them. I can also encourage community leaders, churches and non-governmental organisations to step up with awareness campaigns, safe spaces, and emergency contact lines to support victims of abuse.

Finally, I would like to note that as Botswana celebrates 59 years of independence, it’s also a time to reflect on the values that bind the nation: peace and unity, democracy, and respect for human dignity. Citizens are encouraged to use the holiday not only to enjoy themselves but to promote these values in their homes and communities. Let this Independence Day be marked by joyous, safe, and peaceful celebrations across the country. Happy Independence Day, Botswana!
