The Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) has applauded primary schools in the Chobe region for producing good results in their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) despite the slight decline most schools recorded in 2023.
Four out of 11 primary schools in the region have achieved a pass rate of more than 80% and these are Noka Ya Botshelo English Medium Primary School that scored the highest pass rate of 100%, followed by Plateau Primary School with 84% pass rate, then Lesoma Primary School with 82% pass rate and Kavimba Primary School with 81, 0%.
Other primary schools that scored below the 80% pass rate include Kasane Primary School which obtained 78.4%, Satau Primary School (71.4%), Kachikau and Parakarungu Primary Schools which both obtained 62.9%. Mabele Primary School obtained 60.0% pass rate, Kazungula Primary School (54.3%) while Pandamatenga Primary School got 47.0%.
In an interview, BOSETU’s Chobe Regional Manager Shepherd Kgomo said that the results obtained by the schools are good though they have shown a slight decline this time around. ‘‘The results show a decline this time around as compared to the 2022 results because in each and every school there is a decline in terms of the performance except for two schools which are consistent being Noka Ya Botshelo scoring 100% and Mabele primary 60%,’’he said.
He appreciated Noka Ya Botshelo, Plateau and Kavimba primary schools for surpassing the 80% mark which is the regional target. Kgomo said that Pandamatenga has dropped drastically going below 50% but he noted that the performance generally as a region is good.
Meanwhile, Kgomo has indicated that there are strategies in place to help the schools improve their results, noting that all that is needed is to fully put them to effect so that they can work for schools.
“Schools also need support from different stakeholders in order for those strategies to work effectively,” highlighting that the region has a strategy called Tulyinyemune meaning (lets lift each other) while schools have what they call home remedial among others.
Kgomo added that these strategies need resources and more time from teachers for them to be effective but that he lamented still lacks. The regional manager is of the view that more time from teachers needs for them to be paid overtime allowance instead of being given days.
‘‘I personally think the schools are doing their best but what worries us is the fluctuation of the positions. This year school X will be at the top and next year is another one more especially government schools, this then brings me to the issues of the crop of the students you are having in that particular year. In short strategies have to be supported with resources,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Kgomo has lamented that his region is facing different challenges concerning the teaching profession which include short contracts for temporary teachers and delay in their payments, lack of transfer offers to teachers, shortage of accommodation and double shift issues.
‘‘As a Union we are also an important stakeholder to this region because we go around the schools training them on issues of toxicity at workplace, work ethics, professionalism, code of conduct and other, we covered all the government schools in my region, we are also awarding overall best performed BOSETU teachers during excellence awards,’’ he said.
