Boko’s Vision For A Tech-Driven Future

Date:

In his recent State of the Nation Address, President Duma Gideon Boko set an ambitious tone for Botswana’s digital transformation, unveiling partnerships and projects designed to bridge the digital divide and position the country as a technological leader in Africa.

“Botswana must be ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he declared. “Our partnerships with companies like SpaceX and Starlink will ensure that every citizen, no matter how remote their village, can access affordable internet.”

President Boko’s vision stands out in a continent where only 40% of Africa’s population has internet access, compared to the average of 80% in developed regions. In Botswana, the internet penetration rate is currently 59%, lagging behind countries like Kenya (85%) but ahead of others such as Nigeria (46%). With SpaceX’s entry, the President believes this gap will close rapidly.

According to the President by November 2024, 100 rural schools will be connected under the village connectivity program, with an additional 300 schools targeted by early 2025. The potential impact on education is immense.

The promise of affordable connectivity also aims to address healthcare disparities. With high-speed internet, remote clinics could potentially consult specialists in Gaborone or even abroad, offering lifesaving interventions to areas where healthcare is often out of reach. According to UNICEF, rural areas in Botswana are home to 40% of the population, where access to basic services, including healthcare, remains a challenge.

While the government’s promise of telemedicine has been met with optimism, practical implementation raises serious concerns. Internet connectivity alone cannot resolve the chronic issues within Botswana’s healthcare system, including a shortage of specialists and inadequate infrastructure in many hospitals. A 2023 report from the World Bank highlighted that Botswana has only 5.5 doctors per 10,000 people, one of the lowest ratios in Southern Africa, further complicating efforts to leverage telemedicine.

President Boko also emphasized the broader economic implications of Starlink’s planned investment. “This will not just connect people; it will transform us into a digital hub for the entire SADC region. We are creating jobs, attracting global companies, and laying the groundwork for a prosperous, tech-driven Botswana.”

Currently, Africa faces a technology investment gap. The continent attracted only $4 billion in tech investments in 2023, compared to Asia’s $100 billion, according to reports from the African Development Bank. However, Botswana is on track to attract a significant share of these investments. Starlink’s infrastructure rollout alone is expected to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs while catalyzing opportunities in sectors such as e-commerce and software development.

The inclusion of SpaceX’s Starlink is seen as a bold move, but its track record on affordability is mixed. Across Africa, Starlink has launched in countries like Nigeria, where monthly costs average of about P600, with a base installation fee around P5000 and a monthly fee of about P600 far above what many rural households can afford, which has similar rates with Botswana, according to a report by TechCrunch Africa. The President offered little reassurance that Botswana would be different.

President Boko addressed these concerns, stating, “While the challenges before us are substantial, they are far from insurmountable. Through bold reforms, fostering economic diversification, empowering our people, and maintaining transparency in all government endeavors, we will pave the way for a Botswana that is resilient, sustainable, and prosperous.”

With the President’s roadmap, Botswana could soon redefine its position in Africa’s digital landscape. Success will depend on detailed strategies, inclusive policies, and a commitment to ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the digital revolution. While the path ahead is uncertain, the groundwork laid today could shape Botswana’s role in Africa’s evolving technological future.
