Safari operator &beyond hosted an exhilarating choir competition on Thursday last week, uniting performers and spectators in a celebration of music and culture. Cheers of ululation, clapping, and whistling echoed through the venue as choirs took the stage, captivating judges and the audience alike.
Linda King, the human capital and academy director at AndBeyond, emphasised the deeper significance of the event, stating, “&Beyond life is about promoting the wholeness of the person, whether it be physically or mentally.”
The AndBeyond Botswana lodges choir and traditional competitions, part of the &Beyond Life program, highlighted the power of music in fostering unity and connection. Five choirs from various &Beyond camp, Sandibe safari lodge, Nxabega Okavango Tented camp, Xaranna Okavango Delta camp, Botswana under Canvas choir, Maun office choir.
The competition was divided into two segments. In the first round, each choir delivered four performances adhering to specific categories: Re Batswana, Freestyle, O Lala Le Mang, and Gospel. Among the standout performances was Under Canvas, a choir that, despite having the least preparation time, electrified the hall with an innovative fusion of poetry, dance, and song. Their dynamic stage presence and creativity sent waves of excitement through the audience.
The second phase brought a thrilling conclusion as all choirs performed a single song in the traditional genre, pouring their hearts into their final act. The sheer passion and energy displayed on stage underscored the competition’s true purpose—unity, collaboration, and the transformative power of music.
The judges faced a difficult decision in determining the winners, with deliberations extending as they weighed the exceptional performances. Ultimately, Under the Canvas was crowned champion.
In a fitting finale, all teams came together for a powerful sing-along of Dr. Vom’s “Tsaya Thobane,” culminating in a memorable stage performance. Performers from all camps joined Maxi Khoisan for a rendition of Re Batswana, a song that resonated deeply with the event’s theme.
Summarising the spirit of the event, King remarked, “It’s all about the collective and not the ‘I.’ That’s what helps us create a space where individuals can shine.”
More than just a competition, the event was a journey of camaraderie, cultural pride, and artistic expression. It brought together men and women from diverse backgrounds and roles within the &Beyond camps, proving that music is a universal language that unites and uplifts.
