- his companion is still hospitalized
A 47-year-old man of Beetsha village has recently succumbed to injuries he suffered during a lion attack whilst he was in company of two other villagers searching for their cattle. The incident is said to have occurred on early January at Moteretere cattle post which is located between Beetsha and Gudigwa.
According to assistant superintendent Alec Keikwaletse of Seronga Police, the deceased and another man aged 47 were brutally attacked by a lion while the other 35-year-old managed to escape and hide.
Keikwaletse said the men had gone to look for their cattle that did not return home the previous evening. They were also on the hunt of a lion which they believe had killed one of the cattle.
During the search, the predator is said to have come from a bush behind them and attacked the two while the other one managed to go into hiding. He is the one who reported the incident to the police.
Upon hearing the tragic incident, police are said to have immediately rushed to the scene where they found the two men who were attacked with serious injuries and they then rushed them to Beetsha clinic. Keikwaletse said at around 3 pm on the same day, the men were taken to JP Kavindama Hospital in Shakawe.
On the following day, the 47-year-old deceased was further referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown where he was hospitalised for several days before succumbing to the injuries on Wednesday night.
Superintendent Keikwaletse indicated that the deceased was badly injured on his head while the other one who is still hospitalized at JP Kavindama Hospital was injured mostly on his body though he is recovering.
The top cop has since warned villagers against the dangers of attempting to hunt and kill wild animals that have killed their livestock. He urged them to rather report such cases to the relevant authorities such as wildlife department or at the nearest police station as they are better placed to safely handle such predators.
