The Botswana Bowling Association (BBA) Vice President Edwin Nyoka has encouraged members of the public to come forth and join bowling as it is an inclusive sport despite of age or gender.
Nyoka noted that in an effort to grow the sport they are engaging private entities to help the association build facilities in strategic places like Palapye, Serowe, Lobatse and Maun.
“We are also engaging World Bowls to assist us with equipment for use in introducing short mat bowls before the dream of bowling greens is realised. We are also targeting the youth to come in numbers as they are the future,” he said.
Nyoka has however stated that bowling is growing in that they have a good number of youth from both genders having developed interest in the sport and also participating in competitions.
He said that they have the Re Ba Bona Ha programme comprising of under 15, under 18 and under 25 with Jwaneng as their hub. Nyoka added that the association will conduct training camps over this com-ing weekend in Jwaneng for their under 15, under 18 and under 25 teams.
“We encourage the Private Sector out there to come forth and partner with us to further develop the sport as we usually miss out on International competitions which would improve our standard due to lack of funds,” he said.
Meanwhile, the association will host a competition dubbed Francistown Major Tournament in Francis-town on the 14th March 2026.
The five clubs that are expected to participate in the tournament include Gaborone Bowls Club, Jwaneng Bowls Club, Orapa Bowls Club and Phikwe Bowls Club
“There are five clubs in the country of which one has to host a major tournament as per the BBA annual calendar. The club which accumulates more points from the five Majors is awarded the Haskins Trophy,” he said.
The BBA will send its team to participate at the Youth Championships taking place in South Africa end of March 2026.
