Artists from across Botswana came together last week to unveil a collaborative mural in Maun. The vibrant artwork, which is display of creativity in unity, is a testament to the region’s rich cultural tapestry, does not only beautifies Maun but also serves as a statement that the local art scene is thriving and here to stay.
Rati Motseta, the lead artist and CEO of Mural Supplies, spearheaded the project. “This wall does not belong to us but to the community,” Motseta explained. “I started this with the idea of bringing artists together, and it naturally grew as more artists from this region noticed the work and joined in. I was surprised by how quickly it came together. I was simply the spark that lit the fire, and the other artists fueled it, resulting in this collective masterpiece.”
The mural, initiated at the beginning of the week, quickly gained momentum as it piqued the curiosity of local artists. Among the contributors were renowned names such as Jah Works, Prince Moyo, Odirile Setshwantsho, and Kristina McCarthy, also known as D. Gale. Joining them was emerging talent Gofaone Setshwantsho, along with other artists who added their unique touches throughout the week.
The final piece is a breathtaking collage that captures the essence of the region, blending cultural motifs with evocative imagery. From depictions of traditional basketry to a moving message about road safety symbolized by a child running with a handmade wire car, the mural bursts with diverse styles and stories. Together, these elements form a vibrant narrative that reflects the identity of Maun and its surrounding areas.
Motseta expressed optimism about the mural’s impact, saying, “This region is the mecca of arts in the nation, and there is immense talent here that needs to be showcased. I hope this inspires more artists to come forward and express their creativity.”
Located strategically opposite the newly unveiled basketry monument, the mural has already captured the attention of passersby, many of whom have been stopping to take photos and share them on social media. This collaborative effort, supported by Mural Supplies, Poetavango, and Chobe Holdings, is rapidly transforming Maun’s walls into canvases of cultural pride and artistic expression.
Legodile “Dredd X” Seganabeng, a representative of Poetavango, celebrated the initiative, stating, “Artists are coming out and showcasing works that immortalize this town and bring it to life. Art is breathing new energy into Maun, and we are here for it.”
The mural not only redefines Maun’s urban aesthetic but also marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the region’s art scene, creating a space where community, culture, and creativity converge.
