In an interview, Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) Public Relations Officer Tshegofatso Malepa said that the main objective of the tournament is to continue to reach far places as majority of their tournaments are in Gaborone.

She stated that the tournament will give their athletes that are far north the opportunity to take part, as well as the first timers in the competition being the Maun based grass root development players. Malepa noted that they will soon launch the Reba Bona Ha grassroots sports development project in Maun.

“As BTTA continues to expand the sport’s reach into new regions and communities, the Maun Open Table Tennis Championship represents a key milestone in engaging more players and growing the table tennis ecosystem in Botswana from Gaborone as majority of their tournaments are in Gaborone,” she said.

According to Malepa, it will be the first time for BTTA to host a tournament of this magnitude in Maun. She said that the event promises thrilling competition and a vibrant showcase of talent from across the country. Malepa noted that through the prize money awards, in their collaboration with Phoenix they aim to motivate players while recognizing exceptional performance.

Speaking ahead of the event, BTTA Vice President Technical and Tournament Director Kabo Mosarwe highlighted the significance of the competition, noting that it serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a developmental initiative for athletes aspiring for international exposure.
