21-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped By Three Men

Date:

Police in Maun are investigating a disturbing incident in which a 21-year-old woman from Matlapana ward was allegedly gang-raped by three men while walking home alone from a nightclub.

Maun Police Acting Station Commander, Superintendent Moutlwatsi Ikobeng, confirmed the incident, saying it was reported by the victim in the early hours of Sunday morning, shortly after the attack occurred.

According to Superintendent Ikobeng, the young woman was returning home from Lifestyle Nightclub in Borolong ward when she was approached by three unknown men. The suspects allegedly dragged her into a nearby bush where they took turns raping her.

“After the ordeal, the suspects are said to have stolen her cellphone valued at P1,500 and cash amounting to P150. They also assaulted her, hitting her near the eye with what she suspected to be a bottle,” Ikobeng explained.

He added that the victim could not identify any of the suspects as the area was dark, and investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made so far. Superintendent Ikobeng has appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.

The station commander also took the opportunity to advise the public especially young women to avoid walking alone at night after attending social events, and to use safer means of transport or move in groups where possible.

“We urge members of the community to prioritize their safety. If you must go out at night, please ensure you have someone accompanying you or arrange for transport home. It’s also important to inform someone of your whereabouts and expected time of return,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Ikobeng also reported a separate incident in which a man from Eretsha village in the Okavango region was found dead in his house in Shorobe village on Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported around 12:30 p.m. by an officer from Shorobe Clinic, who had been alerted by staff at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital where the deceased was employed after he failed to report for duty and could not be reached.

Upon checking his residence, which was located near the clinic, the officer found the door unlocked and discovered the man lifeless on the toilet seat. Police responded immediately to the scene, and the body was transported to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital, where he was certified dead. Police are now waiting for post mortem results to determine what could have caused the deceased’s death.  Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
